Almost all of Ullan Baatar's Buddhist monuments were destroyed during this time.
We then visit the tranquil and scenic Aryapala Temple meditation centre set in the mountains amongst beautiful valleys and winding rivers. Aryabal (Avalokitesvara) is the Buddha of compassion, and consort to Tara, he listens to all the prayers of humankind and releases humankind from suffering. The temple is built in the shape of an elephant’s head, and is approached via 108 steps that symbolise the elephant’s elongated trunk. The temple is now a centre for Tibetan Buddhist studies. We will meditate at the temple today. Enjoy dinner of your choice and meet in the evening for yoga practices.

Like all Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia it suffered during the communist takeover, yet it is now vibrant and home to around 900 monks.
