Bhutan
A mythical Shangri La, the land of gross national happiness which prioritises well- being of its peoples over purely economic growth. Bhutan is reported to have the happiest people in the world instilled through the Buddhist teachings of simplicity and compassion. A country steeped in mystery and awe; the land they call the Thunder Dragon (Druk Yul) where wild thunderstorms clash into mystical mountains and raging rivers flow down mist covered valleys. Bhutan is a stunningly beautiful small mountain kingdom among the fabled high peaks of the Himalaya. The Bhutanese people are required to wear traditional clothing to preserve cultural heritage and foster national identity and pride. Polygamy is also legal in Bhutan if the wives and husbands agree, and it is illegal to slaughter animals. Any animal products used for consumption must be imported from neighbouring countries. Forests cover 70% of the country in remote valleys and the southern plains, which are increasing through sustainable development, carbon zero emissions and a deep respect and reverence for the natural world. Most Bhutanese people are Tibetan Buddhist (Vajrayana Buddhism) some are Hindus and the remainder Bon Buddhists (pre–Tibetan Buddhism from Tibet), there are also some Christian enclaves. Spiritually is an integral aspect of Bhutan’s history and culture. Many sacred festivals, landscapes, monasteries, and temples offer opportunities for worship, learning, meditation, and community gatherings.
